"A Collage for COLLAGE"
In this issue, we will be showcasing some of the art by Artist Mónika Ardila. Here is what she has to say about her work, “When I look through a magazine I cannot avoid abstracting textures or fragments that catch my attention, I collect random clippings and leave them on my desktop or library, and leave them over there waiting for them that one day catch my attention. When it happens, I pick the texture and images cuts and start composing, basically, I propose encounters expecting for all those unexpected imaginary arise.
From here, it is very important for me to continue the process withdrawing, either pencil, threads, fabrics or interventions in the picture with paint. Generating a space with different dimensions and sensations in which my essence is reflected. My works are not exclusively collaged when I work hand in hand with all the resources and materials that I feel especially related or that disquiet me. I think it is the way to give to the works personality and uniqueness.”
At first glance, I was quite confused by her work, but as I continued to view it I noticed so many small details that really brought the pieces together. The way that she incorporated the body in with nature, for example in the 2nd image the sleekly styled hair with high waves. All the art in the collection was amazing and that's why I'm sharing this with you all. Now THINK, ABSORB, & ENJOY!

ARE THESE "REAL" SPORTS?
BY ANNA LIPPY
"DERBY CENTRAL "
The unpopular sport of roller derby is played by roughly 100,000 people in 53 different countries. There are nearly 2,000 organized derby leagues around the world that both men and women can participate in. Today’s version of roller derby evolved from a simple race that tested the endurance of the skaters as they lapped the oval rink to a full-contact sport that requires the skaters to lap each other to gain points. A unique thing about this intense, full-contact team sport is that women play it, and when “Roller Derby” is used without a modifier it specifies women's roller derby. To distinguish between men’s and women’s roller derby, it is referred to “Men’s Roller Derby”.
Unlike most popular sports, the culture of roller derby is very open and accepting of people of all races, body type, sexuality and gender identification. Roller derby exposes the lies told about standards for females and replaces them with proof that women are limitless and truly fierce. This American sport is having so much success expanding globally because it is inclusive and empowers the players while gradually shaping a new society. Surprisingly, American football and baseball are the two most popular sports in America, yet the roller derby is an unpopular American sport played popularly in many European countries as well as Australia and New Zealand.
Roller derby is more complex than people skating into each other and getting pushed around. The game is divided into 2-minute sessions called “jams”. In this jam, the team of five - one jammer, one pivot, and three blockers - attempt to lap the other team of 5 as many times as possible without getting lapped as well. The jammer’s goal is to lap the opposing team and the blockers’ goal is to prevent the other team’s jammer from lapping them, using all forms of full body contact excluding sneaky and unsportsmanlike maneuvers. If a player violates the means of contact to block the jammer they will be sent to the penalty zone for one minute. Equipment such as a helmet, a pair of skates, mouthguard, and pads are all required to safely play this dangerous sport. One of the most important things a player needs to play is a punk nickname and a fun, outgoing spirit.
There have been annual WFTDA tournaments in the United States since 2009. WFTDA stands for Women’s Flat Track Derby Association and was founded in 2004. The three Division 1 playoffs will have a single bracket of 12 teams. The Division 2 teams fill two brackets with 8 teams each. Teams that place 1-4 in the playoffs will advance to the championship to fulfill a single D1 bracket of 12 and a D2 bracket of 8. The 2017 International WFTDA Tournament began August 18th and the championship is scheduled for November 5th. The D1 playoffs are taking place in Dallas, Texas; Seattle, Washington; and Malmö, Sweden. The D2 playoffs are being held in Pittsburg and Philadelphia where the D1 championship game will be held. As of June 30th, 2017, the Victorian Roller Derby League is at the top of the ranks with an overall score of 1,120.89. The Boston Roller Derby team won the D2 championship tournament, D1 still continues. The Gotham Roller Girls Derby of New York swept Detroit off their skates in game 4 on Friday, September 8th: 457-54. The Crime City Rollers of Sweden had the home-audience advantage and beat Finland’s Helsinki Roller Derby team 215-170. New York and Sweden will advance to the next round as we await the results of the game on September 9th. Each bracket has two more rounds to go to reach the championship game and fight to claim the 2017 title.
Roller Derby is a growing sport that welcomes people of all ages, genders, and races; the rink doesn’t exclude anyone. As more and more leagues are formed by increasing popularity, the expectations of women’s sports evolve and shapes a different society with broadened female standards. Roller derby is a perfect example of girl power and promotes fierce role models for young girls.

"FLOODING AND HURRICANES"
Houston is known for cowboys and all things southern but has made recent headlines due to flooding. The flooding has been caused by strong hurricanes reaching the outskirts of Texas creating excessive rain and accumulating to several feet of water. Schools and even airports have been completely destroyed, all thanks to hurricane Harvey. Schools are going to be closed for several months in order to be repaired meaning students will be transferring to other schools. There have also been many school transfers outside of Texas, there have been transfers all the way to Georgia. Many people are afraid of what’s to come, and many people in Texas and out of Texas mourn for those who have been lost in this natural disaster.
More hurricanes are arising and will hit soil here in the US, the culprits are hurricane Irma and hurricane Jose. These hurricanes will be hitting a large majority of Florida, even reaching parts of Georgia. The eastern coast of the US is getting bad repercussions from the storm including flooding and strong winds. Several schools in the affected, or to be affected areas, have canceled school and students and families are traveling all across the nation to get to safety. Florida residents are fleeing and evacuating to northern parts of Georgia but others have decided to stay and face the hurricane. More is yet to come from these floods and we have to wait and see what comes next. As we wait all we can do is hope for the best for the affected families.

Q&A
1. Why couldn’t you put your ten favorite songs in order?
“I couldn’t place my ten favorite songs in a particular order because it would be way too hard and some of the songs would be tied for the same spot.”
2. Were all the songs you choose songs you listened to when you were growing up?
“Most of the songs on the list were songs/bands I listened to when I was growing up. As I got older I discovered new songs/bands.”
3. Do these songs help you concentrate?
“A few of these songs help me concentrate other will distract me. Just instrumental music will help me concentrate better.”
4. Which one of these songs resonates most with your personality? Why?
“The first song is Runaway-By: Kayne West because the lyrics are amazing and really sends a strong and clear message to me that I can relate to. The second song is 13th floor/Growing old-By: OutKast because it is really reflective of me and has a lot of wisdom in the song that means a lot to me.”
5. When were you asked to name your ten favorite songs what song did you think about first?
“The first song I thought about when I was asked to name my ten favorite songs was Perfect Circle-: By REM because I listen to it a lot and it is sung by my favorite band”
6. When do you like listen to music?
“I listen to music all the time, sometimes passively. I really listen to the lyrics while driving. I also like to listen to music when I play sports, cooking, and relaxing.”
Presented in no particular order…
“Perfect Circle,” – REM
This is my favorite song by my favorite band. It’s on their first album, Murmur, and like a lot of REM’s early tracks, the lyrics are cryptic and nebulous (in that they make zero sense at all when you read them). But the power of this song is how effectively it communicates emotion through the music and lyrics, even though I could never articulate precisely what it all means. Just listen to the opening piano riff and you’ll get it.
“It Ain't Hard to Tell” – Nas
Nas was my favorite rapper growing up and this is my favorite song of his, off the greatest rap record of all time (Illmatic). The production on the whole album is phenomenal, as is Nas’ flow. But what makes him an all-timer is his wordplay. Nas showed me that rap isn’t just an art, it’s a sport as well. “It Ain’t Hard to Tell” is Nas at his peak verbal prowess. In just a few verses, he seamlessly references The Shining, Five Percenter ideology, Aesop, Villanova hoops, pro wrestlers, and biblical monsters. I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that he dropped Illmatic at 19 years old. Plus that line about Medusa works on about seventeen different levels.
“Once in a Lifetime” – The Talking Heads
The Talking Heads are weird. They’re also genius. This particular song resonates with me because it’s about the unpredictable nature of life and just how amazing it is to look around and consider where you’ve been, who you are, and the many twists and turns life takes that shape you and the world around you. The song hints at the infinite possibilities in life, both past, and present. But the message isn’t about regret so much as sheer awe about how surreal the whole human experience is.
“13th Floor/Growing Old” - Outkast
If Nas isn’t my favorite rapper anymore, that’s because 3 Stacks has usurped his spot. Picking a favorite Outkast song was excruciating (sorry “Elevators” and “Aquemini”), and “13th Floor/Growing Old” isn’t their best song by a long shot. But similar to the previous entry, this song hits me because of its message about growth and introspection. This song reminds me of road trips home from college and quiet drives through the city. The lines at the end of the song, while vulgar, are pretty apt metaphors for the inevitable passage of time.
“Round Here” – Counting Crows
I used to love the Counting Crows growing up, and while I don’t listen to them much anymore, this song still hits me.
“Walk on By” – Dionne Warwick
The vocals, instrumentals, and production are all impeccable. This is just a perfect song.
“Your Hand in Mine” – Explosions in the Sky
The soundtrack to the best sports movie/ TV show of all time, Friday Night Lights (also an amazing book, but I can’t say I’ve read it with their music in the background). Whenever I need to get some serious work done I’ll throw on instrumental music, and this song is my favorite because of the way the music ebbs and flows through so many movements throughout.
“Box of Rain” – The Grateful Dead
The Grateful Dead were my dad’s favorite band growing up, and this song reminds me of him. Phil Lesh wrote it to sing for his dying father, and the song is equal parts mourning, solace, and wisdom. This song makes me grateful for my relationship with not only my dad but any mentors and role models I’ve had throughout my life. The premise of a man trying to convey to his son as much advice and perspective as he can before he passes on is really powerful to me.
“Jane Says” – Jane’s Addiction
This is a placeholder for all the grunge, indie, and alt-rock I listened to growing up in the late 90’s. I was/am a huge fan of grunge and the movements that led up to it, so this place could’ve easily been something by Sonic Youth, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, or Nirvana. But this song was always all over the radio, and it reminds me of when I first got my driver’s license and the freedom that came along with it (although that was long after the song was actually released).
“Runaway” – Kanye West
“And I always find, yeah, I always find something wrong/ You been putting up with my **** just way too long/ I'm so gifted at finding what I don't like the most/ So I think it's time for us to have a toast”
Picking a Kanye song was really tough. I started listening to him in middle school right when The College Dropout came out, so “Through the Wire” holds a special nostalgia factor for me. “Lost in the World” is poignant to me and mega-relevant, plus the Gil Scott-Heron sample is stirring. But “Runaway” is transcendent. The VMA debut performance, the 35-minute movie/music video, the ballet, everything. The production here is top-notch. The song evolves musically, starting with a lone piano key and weaving through heavy layers of synthesizer, auto-tune, violin, and more. This is Kanye at his most reflective, vulnerable, and relatable, and those traits are what I love about him as an artist. This is a song about battling inner demons and your worst tendencies while knowing they’ll win in the end. The juxtaposition of Kanye’s self-sabotage and the hopeful tone is brilliant. Cynicism has never been more inspiring to me.

Zaria’s Seven Fall Staples
Zaria's Seven Fall Staples
As the leaves begin to change and fall, no pun intended. Here are 7 fashion and beauty staples every girl needs to make sure she is well prepared for the cooler weather, and more importantly she looks cute doing so. Lucky, for you, I have this all planned out. I've rounded up seven of my must-haves, and hopefully, they can help you out as we together make this transition from summer to autumn. Good luck falling into fall. Xoxo, Zaria
7) Boots. $Prices vary.
There are so many options for every girl. If you're not a knee boot kind of girl, try mid-calf or ankle boots. Boots are a great transitional piece going into winter. They can be dressed down, and up. Boots come in a variety of colors offering the perfect look for every outfit.
6) Fall lipstick. Different price ranges
It's time to trade those summer shades into deeper, browns, reds, and berries. A good moisturizing lipstick is essential. Burgundy's, and wine colors can take a somewhat basic look from drab to fab in under two minutes. Plus, it looks like you took more effort your look.
5) A comfy hoodie. $Prices Vary
What's better than snuggling up after a long day in your very own hoodie, and not the one you stole from your boyfriend because it looks better on you. Hoodies are a closet staple, they keep you warm while you lounge on the couch; pig out, watching Netflix. It doesn't get any better than that for me.
4) Ponds Dry Skin Cream. $6.39
This facial moisturizer is a must-have for the colder weather. The consistency is amazing: thick and creamy, yet not greasy. It goes on smoothly and smells light and fresh. If the colder weather means dry, cracked skin for you, this little guy will be your best friend. Keep him close.
3) A denim boyfriend jacket. $Prices Vary
A good denim jacket can make any outfit – just throw a jacket over workout legging or jeans, and you have a whole new outfit. Denim jackets are a classic that can be worn with anything, on chilly fall nights, and transitioned into the colder months. It's an overall, great piece to have in your closet year round.
2) Aquaphor Lip Repair. $2.99
Chapped, cracked, and bleeding lips are one of the worst things to happen to anyone. The pain is almost unbearable. That's exactly why everyone and I mean everyone should invest in a good lip balm for the colder weather. I personally love this one, it keeps my lips soft and supple and last for a decent time.
1) Nivea Essentially Enriched Body Lotion. $5.48
I cannot state how much I love this lotion. It thoroughly moisturizes my dry skin, while adding a nice healthy glow. It smells great, is lightweight yet very moisturizing. My skin needs all the extra moisture it can get during the colder months; the consistency is thicker than lotion but lighter than a crème product so it goes on smooth and lasts for a while.
