MEET A RETURNING TIGER

My usual articles are either about quirky coffee shops or student-athletes. I thought I should switch it up this time and take the opportunity to welcome our new Principal, Dr. Parker and help everyone get to know him a little more. He is a very busy man, luckily I got Ms. Whiting to squeeze me in, in between his meetings.

What genre of books do you typically prefer to read?
- “Nonfiction/ biographical, either historical or leadership books.”
Do you have any favorite movies?
- “I do, most of them stem from what I watch with my daughters so Lion King is a favorite. We watch a lot of drama and action.”
How old are your daughters?
- “I have 3, a15, 13, and a 9 year old.”
Are you watching any good TV shows at the moment?
- “We watch a lot of Netflix, most recently would be Black Mirror.”
Do you have any hidden talents?
- “Not that I know of, most of mine have been athletics. When I was here at Tucker, I was in the band for 2 years. I played the trumpet, I wish it was more of a talent but it I think that’s why it only lasted my 9th and 10th grade years. On the athletic side, I played basketball and ran track (high jump) here at Tucker but now that I’m too old for basketball, I started playing golf.
If you could travel anywhere for free, where would you go?
- “I would travel through Europe.”
Where have you traveled so far?
- “South America (Buenos Aires, Santiago Chile), the Caribbean, and last year I went to 4 cities in China.”
If the zombie apocalypse happened right now, what’s the first thing you would do? Disregarding your position as a principal.
- “First I would call and check on my family and make sure everything was okay with them.”
What was your favorite thing about high school?
- “There’s a lot of memories and I think that’s what makes this opportunity to come back so unique. I had a lot of favorite times; spending time with my basketball teammates, eating at Matthew’s with them, the games, Homecoming. The teammates that I had here were my best friends that I had and still have, they were in my wedding and I still talk to them to this day. I met my wife here at Tucker High School, she was a cheerleader while I was playing basketball. There’s a lot of great memories here.”
What school subject did you struggle with the most?
- “I struggled with calculus, math was never my strong suit.”
What did you major in at Eastern Kentucky University?
- I started off my undergraduate degree in sports medicine with a minor in education but I ended up having to major in education and exercise science and health. I was playing basketball for the college at the time but I would have to travel so often that it was hard to keep up with my classes. I went to Jacksonville State for graduate school and got my Masters and NBA in educational leadership and then I got my Doctorate in leadership.
What is some advice you would give to the students?
- “Enjoy high school, it is such a unique time and experience. Enjoy it in a responsible manner and handle your business because this is also a time to prepare yourself for what comes after high school. Take advantage of the friendships and opportunities you have academically. Enjoy it but stay focused and have a plan. Whatever resource I can provide or however I can support students to reach their goals, I’m here to do that.”
Is there anything else you would like us to know?
- “I love Tucker, I’m happy to be here and I look forward to meeting and working with you all.”

"The greatest showman"
Inspired by P.T. Barnum, The Greatest Showman is an original musical that essentially commemorates the birth of performing on stage. This is done by telling the story of a boy that grows up from nothing to create a worldwide sensation. Character Hugh Jackman, who is representing P.T. Barnum in said tale, is on the mission for fame. But, when he begins to take risks and gamble his circus, family, and Swedish opera star Jenny Lind, things take up to be a little more treacherous. Will he end up leaving his family for the money and fame, or will he betray his partner and performers to go back to a simpler life?
“Everything about this film clicks from start to finish. The music, the choreography, the costumes and the performances are top-notch.” says Paul Chambers from Movie Chambers and I could not have said it better myself. In The Greatest Showman, it's a place where you feel as if anything is possible, that any dreamer can conquer the world. There, all individuals have value, family is esteemed highly, and fidelity is shown to be the bedrock of marriage. You might even stand to leave with a feeling of true joy thinking, as did Barnum, "The greatest art is of making others happy." And indeed, messages about the importance of fidelity and family resonate throughout the film. This movie is highly recommended, as it shouldn’t offend any particular crowd and the story is rich with plot.
A BETTER UNDERSTANDING

"male child prostitution in pakistan"
In Pakistan there is a huge issues of prostitution and its not what you may think. Typically when we hear prostitution we think of adults , yet in this case the primary victims would be young men typically from ages 8-18 who are hired by older men. These children are typically poor and the only way for them to get money to sell their bodies. A large portion of these children have drug addictions and use the money from this prostitution to fuel their addictions. Most of them are orphans and runaways trying to stay alive. It is common for them to be targeted at bus stands because that is typically where the orphans and runaways end up because they flee on busses away from their homes. Since this is widely known the people who are looking for these children wait for them to get of the bus promising them safety , but then lure them into awful situations.
You might be thinking how are local authorities not doing anything about this or why is this your first time to hear about this because that's what I was first thinking when I first heard of about this. After doing some research I found that both local authorities and the benefactors benefit from this institution whether it be them using the children for themselves or other things.
The children involved in this heinous institution are more looked down at rather than the people who put them there which makes it hard for them to get out or get help. In a society shunned and seen as evil, it is hard to find them and help them as they fear the harsh ridicule from the outside world. Even if they are found there is also the issue if falling back into the lifestyle of drugs and prostitution. These children also have the issue of death, disease, and drug abuse to deal with. Some of the children are murdered or contract STDs. Many of them don't have access to protection and tend to die young (25-30 years). This issue needs more awareness which is why I'm writing about this, especially with almost 40% of Pakistan's being children and a good majority of them being involved in all of this. Children are the future of our society and need to take care of and not abused or sold.
