"LOST IN SPACE"
Lost In Space is a fast and furious space adventure in which a dying Earth depends on one all-American family for its salvation. On their way to colonize a new world, the family runs into some unexpected problems in their ship. Soon, they find themselves lost in space, out of contact with other civilians from Earth, and exposed to the dangers of the planet they landed on such as tremors, carnivorous predators, and an alien life form that has a confusing relationship with the family as the season progresses. Director Stephen Hopkins does a great job of adding the notorious hook at the end of each episode that leaves you with no choice but to watch the next. According to IndieWire, a review states, “...starts in a crisis and only creates more from there.” and I could not agree more.
For the most part, the thrills still achieve the desired effect, even if what’s around them hampers the overall adventure. Regarding the main characters, though, John constantly reminds us he’s a big burly soldier man by grunting every two seconds and bluntly dropping broad dialogue. Maureen is so anxious she makes viewers anxious; it’s clear she’s a mother shouldered with immense responsibility, but the show would’ve benefited greatly from letting Parker do anything other than shout, cry, or generally tense up. The kids are fine; not spectacular, not annoying. They seem like pretty good role models for kids watching, even if they, too, have to spout some pretty outrageous exposition.

One thing I appreciate in this show is that the science sounds solid. Everything about “Lost in Space” seems to be built on knowledge, so even if you don’t fully understand the science, you trust it. In fact, the writers seem so focused on the science, it’s like they’ll make their characters do anything to get to that last step; to get stuck in a situation where they have to use their minds to survive. The only problem is that Maureen and John look pretty dumb up until they escape. It looks like they chose poorly, and looks matter when you’re constantly asking your audience to trust your logic. Although there is only one season out as of now, I strongly recommend watching it if you are interested in sci-fi mysteries or are just looking for something to watch on Netflix.

"ISS - IN SCHOOL STabbing"
School, although it may cause students enough stress for a lifetime, is a place for growth and opportunity. In the past year, schools have been a focal point throughout media. The nation as a whole has endured tragedies that caused an uproar among students, teachers, and parents. We hear about devastating stories through news sources online, television, or social media, and the news spreads quickly.
Looking at the various news outlets makes you realize how much is going on around you. It creates a sense of reality and shows you how lucky you are to be safe. It doesn’t occur to you that these things could really happen to you or near your community. Near our school, a teacher was stabbed with a butcher knife by a student. This occurred Monday during a class change at Trickum Middle School. Most students, like myself, were informed through social media like Snapchat and Instagram. Trickum Middle School feeds into Parkview High School, making current high school students fearful of what could happen at their school from incoming rising 9th graders

As a high school student myself, I feel as if anything is possible, legitimately. It is important to keep yourself safe, be cautious, and be aware of your surroundings at all times. As of right now, I know that high school students among my school and Parkview High School are shocked by the news. We think it won’t happen near us until it does. Fear of the unknown can hinder your ability to have the best experience you can at school. We must put faith and trust into those in charge and should be thoughtful of what they do to keep us safe every day, however, we should not let our guards down.
The 13-year-old-male student was arrested following the incident, and the teacher’s condition is unknown. Thoughts and prayers go out to the students who were at the school, and most certainly to the teacher who was involved.

On an unseasonably hot autumn day, the old-timey streets of downtown Tucker were lined with a vast array of tasting booths sampling every variety of food imaginable. Thousands of diverse residents of Tucker were out under the stiflingly hot sun to get a taste the culinary richness that lies scattered all around the community. It was not a snobby high society event, but rather a celebration of the food of the people. The delectable aromas of slow cooking barbeque, frying fish, and freshly baked cinnamon rolls wafted through the air mingling into a scent that made my stomach growl ferociously for a taste of Tucker.
My first trip was to the Matthew's Cafeteria booth - a timeless classic in the community. I am well accustomed as a football player to eating our traditional pregame meal every Friday before a football game, but I had never had the opportunity to explore the depth of the menu. I was blown away by the brisket and mac n cheese that I chose to sample. The brisket was perfectly juicy and tender with a delicious combination of tangy and smoky flavors which paired brilliantly with the creamy mac n cheese.
Since I had sampled one of Tucker’s most well-established restaurants, I decided to try something newer. I found a booth for Just Bakery of Atlanta which is opening a new location in Tucker soon and my attention was captivated by a large chai cinnamon roll. I eagerly ordered it, but as soon as I bit in I was thoroughly underwhelmed. It was cold, hard, and the icing which was perhaps the only redeeming quality by taste was spread scantily over the roll. Perhaps, in restaurant the rolls might be freshly baked but I was disappointed by the once promising dessert.

My next choice of booth was not a restaurant, but rather a charity. The Trinity House Fish Fry holds a fish fry every friday from 11-1 PM downtown, and proceeds go to support the homeless population of Atlanta. My review for them however needs no charity because the food was nothing short of phenomenal. I ordered catfish, which was served straight off of the grill. The fish was simultaneously juicy and crunchy. It was served with an array of tasty dipping sauces which varied from sweet and tangy to spicy and a crisp slice of toast.
My next sampling came from the Freakin’ Incan which is a fashionable Peruvian restaurant. I ordered a steak stir fry which seemed appealing to the eye, but was underwhelming to the tongue. The fries were soggy, the steak was tough and overdone. The seasoning was too scarce to redeem my bland waste of $5. From my best guesses The Freakin Incan is neither very authentic nor very tasty.
To cap off my afternoon of tasteful gluttony, I ordered the beef chilli from the Hudson Grille. The chilli was tasty with the perfect amount of spice, however it was cold and chunky, but perhaps this can be forgiven because I ordered it at the tail end of the event.
After all was said and done I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon at the Taste of Tucker, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a culinary adventure. The variety of food at my fingertips was a dream for me. I was able to clearly discern between the best authentic spots for a good meal in the Tucker area and the cheap hipster imitations that try to infiltrate the classic culinary scene of the town.

"Lights! No Camera! Action!"
Lights, no camera, action! The place I am describing is the theatre; a place where real and imaginary characters come to life. At Tucker High, the theatre department doesn’t get as much attention as our sports, but choir and theatre director, Ms.Milner, plans to bring fame to the theatre through many events they are hosting this year. The first semester consists of two shows: the first being a musical showcase and the second a musical.
The musical showcase is exactly what it sounds like, an array of performances to showcase her students talent. The acts will be solos, duets, and ensembles consisting of dances, songs, monologues, or scenes from musicals. As a student of the theatre department, I participated in this showcase last year. For my performance, I recited a dramatic monologue about a woman who lost her brother to drunk driving. Some of the other memorable acts were Emerson Bennett’s version of My Shot from “Hamilton,” Tien’s comedic monologue, and an ensemble that executed a scene from “Dreamgirls.” Ms.Milner intends to keep this same theme, but with all new acts. The showcase will also include two student-directed plays to showcase our creative writing ability. Following the musical showcase will be the first musical the department has put on in years, the production of Little Shop of Horrors.

Little Shop is a musical about a blood-seeking plant that brings fame to a struggling flower shop and lonely florist. This musical is the first of two that will be performed this year, and as the head stage manager, I have some insight on everything that went into putting on the show. I helped Ms.Milner with the casting, as well as helping the cast with learning the script. Some of my other tasks included promoting, renting props, set design, and gaining sponsorship for the musical. Luckily I had my assistant stage manager, Marilee Bales, to divide some of the tasks with. I was also in charge of the crew as a whole. They had many important tasks from making sure the lights and sounds go on/off at the right time to moving set pieces across the stage. The production even required us to work on Saturdays.
Through all the work the musical was a fun experience. After this musical, you can come to THS auditorium to see multiple other events. The second semester the department will have another musical showcase, a chorus concert, as well as the production of The Wiz. I will hopefully be able to perform in The Wiz to gain insight into what it is like being on the cast, instead of crew.

"China Brainwashing The Uighur Muslims"
How would you feel if you were forced to practice a certain religion? Religion is a big factor in this world, and being forced by other people to believe in something that you don't believe in or agree with is oppressive and simply disrespectful. Some countries allow you to practice your own religion, while others don’t. China restricts their citizens to follow the same religion, a major one being Confucianism. Although, most Chinese people are atheist and there are minorities in China that follow the religion of Islam. These Muslims want to practice Islam and only Islam; they don’t want to believe things based off of philosophies, which is a fundamental aspect of Confucianism. The Chinese Communist Party wants to remove any devotion to Islam from China.
Depriving a group of their desired faith practices is not an easy task and certainly receives some backlash. In Xinjiang, China, more than half the population of 24 million belongs to Muslim ethnic minority groups. A group of Muslims in China known as the Uighur Muslims are not allowed to follow Islam and are being forced to listen to lectures and sing hymns about removing their religion. A Muslim named Abdusalam Muhemet was detained by a police officer and sent to a camp because he was reciting verses from The Quran during a funeral. Muhmet said, “That was not a place for getting rid of extremism... That was a place that will breed vengeful feelings and erase Uighur identity.” This shows how many Muslims are being brainwashed into something they don’t want to believe in.
Although Islam remains in China, there are very strict rules as to how someone should follow Islam. Simple things like praying 5 times a day is not allowed because it is a huge aspect of Islam. It is considered one of the five Pillars of Islam; every Muslim is required to do this. How do you think all the Chinese Muslims feel about not being able to perform in one of the most important Pillars of Islam?

"first robotics"
FIRST or “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology” is an exceptionally difficult robotics competition that is designed to challenge innovative students. It was created in 1989 by Dean Kamen and has programs for grades 5th -12th. FIRST is an expensive competition if your school doesn't have the parts and equipment necessary to construct a robot; fundraising is fundamental for new teams. In addition to providing experience in engineering, designing, and programming, FIRST also helps build critical thinking skills, time management skills, and teamwork skills.
|
FIRST robotics contains strict rules, various constraints, and a meager time limit. Students must create teams to build and program an industrial-sized robot. These robots must able to play on a vast field against other competitors. In alliances of three, teams must place cubes onto a sizeable balance in the middle of the field and two smaller balances opposite from each other on the field to score points. At the beginning of all matches, teams have a 15 second autonomous period, during which all scoring and movement is programmed. After autonomous, the driver period is 135 seconds. Also, at the end of a match the robots can reach up and attach to the center of the balance in the middle of the field and elevate themselves to gain extra points - the alliance with the highest score wins. Overall this competition is challenging, exciting, educational, and great experience in many technical fields.

"To Become a BETA Member "
The National Honorary Beta Club is a prestigious and internationally recognized honor society along the ranks of National Honor Society and the Technology Student Association. The Beta Club’s goal is to mold students’ character through community service, ethical conduct, and leadership and to promote students to become the young leaders of the future. This process entails that the student must be willing to participate in Beta sponsored events such as conventions, community events, and meetings. The Beta club works on a point system; for every event or meeting you attend, you get a certain amount of points. You are required to have at least 100 points by the end of the school year for your year of Beta Club activities to count. This means that it is to your benefit to engage in Beta activities. Thus, the Beta Club is only for the most responsible and astute and all Beta members should take activities with the utmost importance.
There are a number of requirements one must meet to qualify as an initiate of Beta Club. Your GPA cumulative needs be at least 3.5 or above, this means you need to be of the most upstanding academic behavior. Note that this means only sophomores and older can join Beta as freshmen’s GPA hasn’t begun yet. You would also need to be “tapped” meaning that other members of the club would come to your class and officially hand you a yellow piece of paper stating you have formally been chosen to join, however, that means if you want to join you have to pay Beta’s dues. As for the price of dues, the underclassmen must pay $25 whilst the seniors pay an additional $5 for their graduation chord.

After the submission of your required membership materials, you will be formally invited to the initiation ceremony. The ceremony is in honor of your pathway to an encouraging future with the Beta Club. It includes all of your fellow peers that have strived for academic excellence just as you did. The ceremony begins with you entering the auditorium in two lines of your peers dressed in all black attire - Beta Club’s colors - and walking down the aisles single file. While this is happening, loved ones are in the audience admiring you for your accomplishments and acceptance into the club. Then, the head counsel of Beta Club give the introductory speeches and light the red, white, blue, black, and gold candles, each color with a significant meaning. Then the guest speaker gives their motivational speech to encourage the new initiates to continue following the path destined for greatness. The ceremony ends with an extensive banquet primarily in your honor for your academic accomplishments.
Beta is a great program for all grade levels. If you meet the requirements I highly recommend that you join. It is an exceptional club to be in, especially for those who want more to add to their college recommendations as Beta is one of the most looked at clubs when applying. Beta is meant for the brightest and most capable students who strive for excellence daily and wish for something more than their AP classes. I implore to everyone who can join Beta that they become a member as soon as possible.

"Going Mutts for Violet"
There is an overwhelming amount of animals in shelters that yearn for a companion. In this bi-monthly column, I will be highlighting the pet of a student or a teacher that has been adopted from a shelter. I will also aim to dispel any false assumptions about sheltered animals. Most animals are a reflection of the way they were treated at a young age, so often times the animal’s behavior says more about their previous owner than it does about their breed. We will cover a wide range of topics, from animal abuse to the yummiest seasonal treats for your pet. Plus, who doesn’t like seeing pictures of cats and dogs?
There are many reasons why you should adopt a pet, the most obvious being it’s a win-win situation; the animal gets a home and you get a lovable companion! Many people get pets to keep them company and substitute relationships with partners, children, or family members. This is usually the case for elderly people as their children move out and start families of their own. Having a pet also helps one maintain a level of responsibility as they must care for their pet daily.

For over 50 years PAWS Atlanta has found homes for over 46,000 animals. They were originally named the Dekalb Humane Society but changed their name in 2002 and are now the oldest “no-kill shelter” in Georgia. Because this is a no-kill shelter, animals are not euthanized due to overcrowding. They are only put to sleep if they are in pain this stifling their quality of life.
This month’s article will highlight student Leah Whitmoyer’s pet, Violet. Violet is a boxer mix and was adopted from PAWS Atlanta when she was around 3 or 4. Now she is in a very loving home and is about 5-6 years old in human years - about 35-42 in dog years. Her favorite toy is her squeaky ball. She loves joining the family on walks/ hikes and car rides, she gets super excited when she hears those words. Violet loves to eat, she’ll eat anything she can get her paws on. One time she ate an entire apple pie off the counter while they were gone!
The PAWS Atlanta mission is to have animals and people bring out the best in each other - and it definitely has in the Whitmoyer family! Violet has added so much laughter and joy not only to the lives of her new family but everyone she meets.

"Just Say No"
(Disclaimer: Today I will be talking specifically about victims who are women and rapists who are men.)
Often in the cases of rape and sexual assault people asked the victim “why didn’t you say no?”. A recent event in which a fellow male student said, “Well, it’s not rape if she didn’t really say no” in context to the Kavanaugh case. When I heard it I was completely disgusted as were many others in the class. This way of thinking is something frightens many women. Often the people who say things like that don’t understand the potential consequences that can occur when a woman does say no.
Many people don’t understand or fail to think about the prevailing size difference between women and men. So when a 6-foot tall man grabs a 5-foot tall woman, there is a lesser chance for a good outcome with the female victim. Countless women have talked about no matter how hard they fought to get away from their assailant they couldn’t simply because of the size difference. Another thing that I thought most people would understand but don’t would be fear. We often hear the time paralyzed with fear, unable to move or speak. Many women who remember their assaults can recall the feeling of complete horror, frozen in time. When this happens, no matter how much someone wants to talk they are merely too scared. One of the scariest things that could happen if you say no is being physically harmed. There are innumerable stories of men getting so angry when a woman says no to his advance that he kills her. In 2017, a 34-year old man murdered a 19-year-old who rejected his marriage proposal.

"My Struggle With Cochlear Implant "
Hi, my name is Lejla Alijevic and I was born deaf. I would like to share some parts of my story about how I can hear. When I was five months old, I received hearing aids but they were not working out for me. I had surgery to get a cochlear implant at age seven. There was a risk that the implant couldn’t have worked, but it did. As my parents and I have spoken to several people who had been through the process of receiving a cochlear implant, my expectations were very low. They told my parents the beginning would be very difficult and what I hear won’t sound naturally. Therefore, my way of dealing with this was to expect nothing and deal with whatever happens as it comes. I was asked to remove my hearing aid in my left ear and alarm bells started ringing in my head as I thought “how am I going to cope with no hearing aids?” Then my audiologist started to connect everything and put the cochlear implant in the right position. She activated the cochlear that connects to the implant in my head. As soon as she switched it on I could hear some slight noise. This was just background noise from computers and air conditioning systems. The audiologist started to speak to me, asked me if I could hear her, and asked what exactly I could hear. It’s very difficult to explain what I heard; I knew she was talking from reading her lips, but the sound wasn’t natural at all. The audiologist described it as a beeping. To me, it was just the sound of speech but in a very quiet and deep tone. All noise was in the same tone. The audiologist decided to do a little experiment; I had to stay where I was while she stood about 2 meters behind me and made a ‘shhhh’ sound. If I heard this I had to raise my hand. She started with the very quietest sound, and to my mother’s surprise, my hand went straight up. It was such a clear noise to me that it was almost like she was next to me. If this was done with my hearing aids in there’s no way I would have heard it.
I found the next weeks very challenging. Having a cochlear implant on my right ear with a hearing aid on my left ear was difficult because I heard a low noise with my hearing aid and a high noise with my cochlear implant. It wasn’t a correct balance for me and it gave me a headache. At that time, bedtime was my favorite part of the day because I could switch off and just be in peace. In the mornings when I put the implant on it scared me as the everyday noise was so loud, but I knew I had to persevere. I had to stay positive, as people said to me, it takes time to adjust. My rehabilitation in the first couple of weeks involved my mother saying single words while my covering her mouth. The majority of the time, I got them wrong. But, as time went on, I recognized more words. After several weekly appointments with my speech pathologists, progressed from words to sentences, and I did so rather quickly.
After receiving a cochlear implant, your brain needs time to adjust and learn how to deal with sounds. It is a slow process but I can’t express enough how grateful I am to be given the opportunity to have a cochlear implant. Yes, at the start it is incredibly hard, but hard work and having the determination to keep going will help you succeed. The implant has improved my quality of hearing so much. Having a cochlear implant is a gift for me.

"WhatsApp Causing Trouble on the South Side?"
WhatsApp and a series of other social media apps have been wreaking serious havoc and even murder through the propagation of fake news. One of the most rampant cases took place in India. Rumors have been spreading through the app causing panic and hysteria. Many have received suspicious messages claiming that the world is coming to an end, children are being kidnapped, and that people are trying to harm the recipients. Children in the town of Kannur, Kerala have had to learn not to listen to these rumors the hard way. Boys and girls are questioned about whether to trust news that may be misleading. Would you believe everything you read? Can social media really contribute to causing people believing whatever is said to them?
A survey was conducted by a teacher in India to figure out whether her students would believe fake news given to them. The survey showed that students knew not to listen to everything they are sent or hear about. If students are smart enough not to believe it, then why are so many in India still believing it and putting themselves in danger? Throughout the years, apps have been constructed to make communication easier for families and friends who live in different countries. WhatsApp allows you to send pictures, text, take videos, and make video phone calls internationally.
Kannur has suffered from the spread of fake news and viral hoaxes from many years through social media such as WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. At least 150 out of the 600 government schools in Kannur are taking 40 minutes of their time to inform students on fake news and the dangers it can stir up for individuals.
Rumors spreading about hurricanes coming to wipe out the entire population and the world ending soon have come about in these apps. After reading articles sent out throughout social media apps, several questions have been brought up. Messages that are plain and simple rumors, gossip, pornography, and even jokes have made some question their own family and friends. According to Washington Post, “A full 75 percent of Indians use WhatsApp “groups” function, which allows for real-time communication and content sharing among up to 256 people at once.” Since so many people receive the same message at once it spreads much more quickly than sending it to individuals separately.
These rumors have created tension and trust issues ruining relationships between families, schools, other family members, communities, and even other students. A rumor in early July rattled up parents when an article went out claiming that two men on motorcycles were kidnapping children, which resulted in the murder of 25 suspects believed to be the cyclists. Another rumor that confused and upset many was that Mahatma Ghandi had raped multiple women and children. This disturbed a lot of people because Ghandi is known as a peaceful, kind, inspirational figure who helped Indians fight against the British for Indian independence. In 2017, over 240, 000 children were kept away from the measles shot, due to fake news claiming that the vaccination was only a “trick” and would actually “kill” the children.
According to Himanshu Gupta, “The solution is for WhatsApp to build a crowdsourced system managed by human moderators to monitor problematic content that users forward to them.” This can teach others to be cautious of what is posted on social media as well as not to believe what you see or hear online.
